December 7 * Christmas Trees

Jesus is The Life
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will have life even if he dies.”
John 11:25

Christmas trees are my favorite part of celebrating Christmas. Sitting in a quiet room with nothing but the lights on the Christmas tree is so peaceful. I relax just thinking about it.

For activity ideas today I have a brief history of O Christmas Tree and a few craft ideas.

Craft Ideas
This craft saves the precious small hands in a Christmas tree. I thought it would be neat to combine the children's different sized hands in one tree, by layer or all mixed together.

The Snow Cone Trees are cute and could easily modified for any age with markers or stickers.

And finally A Pine Cone Christmas Tree. If you live where there are large pine cones I think this would be especially neat.

I hope you are enjoying your Christmas season. Please share your thoughts and stories.

December 6 * Hats

Jesus is King of Kings
On his robe and on his leg was written this name "King of Kings and Lord of Lords". Revelation 19:6

A crown of thorns may not seem to fit with Christmas, but really Christmas would have been an empty gesture without the cross. The Tale of Three Trees is a great story that shares about Christmas and Easter. If you don't have the book you can read it here. Here is a song of the story, with pictures.

Here are a couple of animated videos Kids 4 Truth. Christmas Message eludes to the crown of thorns.

Watchmaker is one that I just really like :)

For fun you can do a search for "hats" on Google just to see how many different hats there are. When I did this there was only one questionable picture that came up in 13 pages.

You could also make crowns for all the royalty in your house.

First Palette Kids Crafts has 9 crown patterns you can choose from to print and create.

December 5 * St. Nicholas

Serve Jesus by Giving

St. Nicholas, Santa so many different views. I'll share mine at the end for anyone who is interested. First the activity ideas and links.

This site has stories, activities and crafts about the real Saint Nicholas. www.stnicholascenter.org The link above takes you to the stories page.

The Life of Saint Nicholas gives a good history with pictures for the smaller ones.

Saint Nicholas of Myra The Cheerful Giver
is a shorter story with pictures.

Decide how your family can be more generous this Christmas. I know there are many good organizations that do things for Christmas. Our family chooses to donate to Angel Tree through the Salvation Army. I like that they know the real meaning of Christmas and in our area there is a chance for personal contact with volunteers. We don't have a large budget so we make things to donate- hats, blankets, doll accessories, jewelry and toys, as well as gifts we may have gotten through the year that we did not want for one reason or another. Samaritan's Purse is another one I like, but I don't always remember in time. The site looks like it has many options and ways to give.

Now my thoughts on Santa. If you don't care, or may be offended please stop now

We decided when our first son was born that we would not do Santa. The idea of Santa watching and keeping score, bringing gifts from our wish list - only if we're good - is far too much like some people's idea of God. We did not like the idea of our children expecting and receiving gifts from someone they don't know; rather we felt it was important for them to know they received gifts from people who know and love them. There is also the idea that some children, because of their thinking and personalities, will at least consider rejecting God because their parents told them Santa was real, then they find out their parents basically lied to them about Santa. This was not a chance I was willing to take for some "fun" memories. There are countless other ways to make fun memories. I also don't see it wise to put so much energy into deception for children you are going to one day try to train to be honest. I guess that's probably enough of my opinion on this.

We chose instead to study the real person who is a good role model. If you made it this far, thank you, and know I am not judging or telling you what should happen in your family. You know what happens in my family and some of the thinking behind it. This thinking is part of where Christmas is About Jesus began.

What ways has your family found to be generous?
What can you give besides gifts or money?

December 4 * Candy Cane

Everyone who hears these things I say and obeys them is like a wise man. The wise man built his house on rock. Luke 7:24
To illustrate the idea of building on the rock have your children try building a tower of blocks on a ball or pillow before building on a good foundation of the floor or table. Even a table can be a shaky foundation if it's bumped too hard, some floors are too, for that matter. We have concrete, so no bouncing when someone walks around. :)

Here is a short sweet poem about the candy cane's true meaning:

Legend of the Candy Cane
Look at the Candy Cane
---what do you see?
Stripes that are red
like the blood shed for me.
White is for my Savior
who's sinless and pure!
"J" is for Jesus, my Lord,
that's for sure!
Turn it around and a staff
you will see---
Jesus, my shepherd,
was born for me!
---Author Unknown

Make Candy Cane cookies.

Cute ornament project: You could use different beads of whatever kind you happen to have. Cranberries and popcorn would work well to hang outside.

December 2 * Snow

Snow, beautiful, white, refreshing, snow.

Friendship with God made possible by Jesus.

I love this version of this verse:

The Lord says, “Come, we will talk theses things over." Isaiah 1:18a

Can you believe that? The God of the universe is inviting you into conversation.

He is inviting your children also. I pray today's devotion will help you help them to begin or continue that conversation.

Activity ideas:

Spend time talking things over with God. Are there joys, hurts, questions? Talk to him. Be sure to listen for his answers as well.

Build a snowman, even without snow. pillows, toys, boxes, marshmallows ....

This website is like an entire unit of Snowman fun. There are some cute poems and easy craft ideas, as well as some more involved activities and a book list.

Preview Christmas is About Jesus

It has occurred to me that buying a book designed to teach Biblical truths to your children from someone you have never met may not be very easy.

Thankfully you can preview the first 6 days and the devotion on Jesus right here. I hope this helps you to decide if this is the right tool for your family.
